Getting the Details on WiMax and the Chicago 4G Wireless Networks by Jon Jacobson
You may have been too busy to notice, but already in place is the heralded Chicago 4G network. All across the city, subscribers are able to access this technology and treat Chicago as if it were one big hotspot. If this concept sounds preposterous, you are probably just used to the limitations of a WiFi connection, but there is no reason to continue on with your skepticism. The difference is in this WiMax technology, the path to highly successful wireless internet service all across town.
What is WiMax? Firstly, it stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, which is a somewhat clumsy way of saying that the technology can handle what is already out there and more – and do it at a better pace. When discussing the different generations, you can look as far back as the 2G network, which allowed users to send text messages for the very first time. Naturally, full internet service was eagerly anticipated and it did arrive in the form of the 3G network.
Taking that to the next level was the motivation behind the 4th generation network that has begun popping up all over the country and continues being introduced in different cities. The next level mobile network means full compatibility with anything already in existence, including the 3G network. An example of this situation coming into play is when you are working from a mobile connection but you realize you are going to leave the Chicago area and aren’t sure if the surrounding areas have the same capabilities. In that situation you 4th generation device would be able to click over to the nearest 3G network without skipping a beat. The interoperability factor is key.
Of course, the Chicago 4G network can do much more than handle everything else to come before it, only slightly faster. It can actually establish a safer internet connection right away, while taking the speeds of a 3G network and multiplying them by nearly 5 times. If you need some concrete examples, just imagine seeing crisp video feeds which were impossible working with your 3G device. You can open up the door to video conferencing and messaging or quickly upload some photos and move on.
Still, the expansion of the service area is what many people are finding the most appealing aspect of the 4th generation network. Using a sort of cell tower system, the expansion of the network was possible once the structures themselves were in place. Instead of depending on wireline connections, there is no limit to where this service can go. It’s like the feeling you get when you are standing on what seems to be the end of the earth, yet you are talking with multiple bars on your cell phone. How is this possible? You will feel like you are getting access to a hotspot, yet one that had such a range as never before seen in the past.
